A very large area of sea ice is missing from Antarctica. In the Bellingshausen Sea, there is a gap that is about the size of France. This area is 650,000 square kilometers smaller than usual. Scientists compared this to the average levels from 1991 to 2020. This loss of ice is very big and makes people worried about sea levels.
The weather in the Antarctic Peninsula is also changing. Recently, a heatwave made temperatures reach 15.4C. This was more than 20C higher than the normal temperature. Because it is so warm, there is not enough ice forming during the winter months.
On 10 June, the total sea ice around Antarctica was 11.4 million square kilometers. This is less than the usual 12.6 million square kilometers for that date. This shows that the ice is not growing as it should.
This problem is very bad for animals. Emperor penguins need stable ice to live. Recently, the ice formed late and broke up early. In 2022, many penguin chicks died because the ice was not strong enough. Small animals called krill also need ice to hide and find food. Without ice, the whole food chain is in danger.
Finally, melting ice can make global sea levels rise. Scientists are watching the Pine Island and Thwaites glaciers very closely. If there is no sea ice to protect them, these glaciers might melt faster. This could cause more ice to enter the ocean and change our world.
