Supermarkets in seven European countries are having big problems. These countries are Belgium, Estonia, Ireland, Finland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Sweden. Hackers attacked the computer systems of these stores. Because of these attacks, the temperatures in the refrigerators and freezers went up very high. This is a big danger for food. In Sweden, an ICA store said its freezers broke at 2am after an attack. In one Estonian supermarket, the temperature went up to 50C. This heat ruins food very quickly. These stores are easy targets because they use many connected devices to control cooling.
Digital problems also happen in nature. Some people use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to plan trips. This can be dangerous because AI sometimes gives wrong information. Experts call this "cognitive surrender" when people stop thinking for themselves and trust AI too much. For example, three 20-year-old hikers on Mount Shasta made bad choices because they used Googleโs Gemini AI. They did not bring enough food. In British Columbia, a hiker needed a rescue after using Anthropicโs chatbot, Claude, to plan a trip. In Grand Teton National Park, the number of people using AI for travel information rose from zero to 26 percent.
There are two types of digital problems. Digital attacks are when bad people intentionally break systems, like the European supermarkets. Digital errors are when software like AI gives wrong information by mistake. Both problems can cause real danger in the physical world. It is important to use human judgment and not trust digital tools completely.
